[ARCHIVED] Dana House Building Improvements to Begin

Dana House

The City of Lebanon will be commencing with removal of old roofing and replacing the roof systems on the Dana House, as well as performing other limited building improvements.

Re-roofing of the original portion of the Dana House, located at 20 Seminary Hill in West Lebanon, is being done in conformance with the U.S. Secretary of the Interior’s Historic Preservation Standards and Guidelines. It is likely that the original roof was constructed of a hand-split wood shingle system, relying on the common tree species in the Upper Valley area at the time, such as cedar or oak. There was customarily spacing for natural ventilation on the undersides to prolong the life of the wood.

Maintaining the historic character of the Dana House is integral to securing future project funding and to community goals to actively use the property for educational outreach and engagement. The existing asphalt roof will be replaced in-like-kind. The concrete block foundation for the existing bulkhead will also be removed and replaced with cast-in-place concrete.

The work is scheduled to take place in two phases between April 6, 2020 and May 15, 2020.
