[ARCHIVED] Share the Road Safely, See and Be Seen

Be Safe Be Smart Be Seen Newsflash

Sunrise is late, sunset is getting earlier, and darkness makes it harder to see each other on the road.

Drivers, this is a good time to check your speed - the speed limit is 25 mph in the city unless otherwise posted. Darkness and wet/slippery conditions require even lower speeds. Put the phone away while driving and focus on your surroundings in order to see others using the roads and crosswalks. Safe drivers save lives.

Pedestrians and cyclists, do your part to make sure you can be seen. Shine brightly with light colors, reflective clothing, and lights. Did you know that wearing a reflective item after dark is required by state law? Proceed with caution when cars are approaching - even in a crosswalk make sure that cars are stopping before you go.

Practice these safety tips while exploring the city. Pedestrians and cyclists, have you:

  • used the tunnel under the pedestrian mall, connecting the Mascoma River Greenway to the Northern Rail Trail?
  • viewed the art installations on the rail trail east of Bank Street Extension?
  • crossed Route 4 at the new crosswalk by the middle school and taken the newly built path behind the DPW building down to the rail trail?
  • walked along the Mascoma River between the skate park on Glen Road and the Powerhouse Mall?

Wear your brightest reflective gear, proceed with caution, and we look forward to seeing you on the roads and pathways of Lebanon!
