Sections of School Street Cemetery Closed

School Street Cemetery

The City would like to announce that sections of the School Street Cemetery are currently closed due to a recent landslide and the potential for further instability. This precautionary measure is being taken to ensure the safety of everyone in the vicinity.

The landslide, which occurred in April, has rendered certain areas of the cemetery unsafe for public access. Our primary concern is the well-being of our community, and therefore, we urge everyone to refrain from entering the specific area affected by the landslide or driving vehicles through the cemetery.

While pedestrian traffic into the cemetery is still permitted, it is important to exercise caution and be aware of the potential risks involved. Please be advised that entering the area affected by the landslide, which has been cordoned off, is strictly prohibited for your safety.

The City understands the significance of the School Street Cemetery as a place of remembrance and historical importance. The City is actively working to assess the situation, stabilize the affected area, and reopen the cemetery as soon as it is deemed safe to do so.

In the meantime, we encourage you to explore alternative locations for peaceful contemplation and reflection. There are several other parks, green spaces, and memorial sites within the city that offer serene environments for honoring loved ones.

The City will continue to provide updates on the progress made toward reopening the School Street Cemetery and the road within the cemetery as the situation develops. Public safety remains the City’s top priority, and we appreciate your cooperation and understanding during this temporary closure. If you have any urgent inquiries or require further assistance, please contact the Department of Public Works at 603-448-3112.
